Medical Leave Policy- Section I: Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to provide County employees, departments, and agencies with information about federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and agreements that govern medical leaves of absence. This policy is established in order to:
- Summarize medical leave protections under federal, state and local laws, County of Sonoma Civil Service Rules, negotiated union contracts, and the County’s Salary Resolution.
- Describe eligibility requirements for medical leave.
- Provide employees with a process to request medical leave.
This policy complies with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)1, California Family Rights Act (CFRA)2, California Pregnancy Disability Leave (CPDL)3, California Kin Care Law4, and the California Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families act of 2014 (Paid Sick Leave Law, or “PSL”)5. This policy is a compilation of the applicable provisions relating to medical leave which are frequently subject to changes in the law. Should this policy be in conflict with laws, rules, or agreements, those laws, rules, or agreements shall control.
