About the Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a rent subsidy program that assists eligible low-income persons and their families in obtaining affordable, decent, and safe housing by paying a portion of their rent. Eligible applicants locate a unit in the private rental market. Rent must be within the current allowed Payment Standards.

Fraud Alert

There is no fee for submitting a waitlist application or receiving a voucher. No credit card number is ever collected when applying to the Housing Authority waitlists.

Preferences

Families on the Sonoma County Housing Authority’s waiting lists will be served based on their numerical lottery standing and any preferences that apply. Preferences are granted to households with members in the following groups:

  • Persons with disabilities
  • Seniors (62+ years of age)

Applicants with these preferences will be served before applicants with no preferences. You will be required to provide documentation for any preferences claimed when you apply at the time your name is reached on the waitlist.
