Did You Get the Shake Alert?
On Tuesday, September 13 at 6:39 p.m., Santa Rosa experienced a 4.4 magnitude earthquake that triggered ShakeAlert, an early warning system developed by the US Geological Survey and other partners. You may have received this alert which came using the Wireless Emergency Alert system (WEA). This was a message sent to smartphones and with a loud warning tone.
Although the system sent warnings in both English and Spanish, the Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management received reports that some people did not receive the alert in Spanish or within the targeted area.
If the event had required evacuation or shelter in place, the WEA would have been followed by a SoCoAlert, which is an opt-in system.
Please be sure to sign up here:

We want to report any failures of the system to the appropriate federal agency to correct any deficiencies. To receive a Spanish alert, your smartphone needs to have Spanish as the primary language.
If your phone was set to Spanish and you received the English alert, we would like you to hear from you via email or phone: Jorge.rodriguez@sonoma-county.org or Sam.wallis@sonoma-county.org or 707-565-1369.

Mark your calendar for the Sonoma Ready Emergency Preparedness class at the Santa Rosa Central Library, 211 E Street in Santa Rosa this Sunday, Sept. 18 from 2-3 p.m.
This class will prep you with everything you need to know to be prepared for any disaster. There will be free NOAA radios, while supplies last.
Learn about go bags, planning for evacuations, signing up for alerts and local neighbor-to-neighbor groups preparing and supporting each other for emergencies.
Drought TIP: As you plan for the winter season, one great way to save water is by capturing rainwater for reuse. There are many premade systems, as well as DIY options available.
Once you collect the rain you can reuse it for irrigation purposes. To learn more, or to find available rebates, visit: https://www.savingwaterpartnership.org/
