We have good news to share this week: COVID-19 case rates and hospitalizations are continuing to fall in Sonoma County, mirroring a decline in California and the United States. Let’s all do our part to prevent another surge in cases. Sonoma County has detected 12 cases of the new BA.2 Omicron sub-variant, which accounted for 35% of U.S. infections for the week ending March 19, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The sub-variant is more transmissible than the Omicron BA.1 variant that caused the massive surge in COVID cases over the winter, but it does not appear to cause more severe illness. Vaccination —  and a booster dose, as soon as you are eligible for one — is the best way to protect yourself and the people you care about. The vaccine is safe, effective and free. We’ll share some resources below.

For many of us with school-aged children, spring break is drawing to an end this week. Before your kids return to class, please make sure they are tested for COVID-19 and follow your district’s guidelines for isolation or quarantine. Every student and school staffer in Sonoma County should have received a free COVID-19 test kit from the state before spring break, and this is the time to use them. If your child is displaying COVID symptoms, please do not send them to school.

Local Vaccine & Testing Opportunities

Vaccination and testing clinics are being held throughout the county to serve people who do not have convenient or affordable access to healthcare providers.

Residents who test positive using an at-home antigen test are urged to report the result by calling the county’s COVID hotline at 707-565-4667 (4701 in Spanish). Anyone who needs help making a vaccination or testing appointment may also contact the hotline. 

Vaccine Video Contest

Do you know a Sonoma County student who is a video virtuoso? If so, we want to hear from them.

The Sonoma County Office of Education, Healthcare Foundation Northern Sonoma County and the County of Sonoma are inviting local students to make videos highlighting the benefits of COVID-19 vaccines. The top three student videos will be awarded a total of $3,000 in cash prizes. 

The Vax Vid contest is open to Sonoma County students in the sixth through 12th grades. The videos can outline the availability, ease and advantages of being vaccinated, or examine facts vs fiction about the vaccine. Video submissions should be 30 to 60 seconds long, but there are no limits on your creativity. Students could produce a newscast, music video, animation, commercial or just about anything else that shows how original and inventive you are!
