Groundbreaking for new Santa Rosa Fire Station 5

Nearly six years after it was destroyed by the 2017 Tubbs wildfire, city, county, state and federal partners celebrated the groundbreaking for Santa Rosa Fire Station 5. Located on the corner of Fountaingrove Parkway and Stagecoach Road, the project is expected to be completed in the spring or summer of 2025.

The 2.11-acre lot will house a two-story 10,763-square-foot fire station, an operations yard, on-site parking and service road. Until then, the temporary fire station on Parker Hill Road will continue to operate in order to maintain response times while serving the residents of Fountaingrove and Hidden Valley neighborhoods.

Listos California launches its “Summer Of Safety” campaign

Listos California, the state’s emergency preparedness campaign led by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, has released its guidance to help Californians make this a Summer of Safety.

Stay cool in extreme heat. Learn the differences between (and appropriate responses for) heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Practice water safety in fast and cold water. Be sure to wear a life vest when swimming, boating or playing in the water
Prepare for power outages. If you use electrical medial and assistive devices, create a personal disaster plan.
Be ready for wildfires by signing up for alerts and having a plan.
Stay indoors in wildfire smoke. Monitor the Air Quality Index to assess how much pollution is in the air.

Russian River beach parking lots fill up early on weekend mornings

Parking lots at Sunset and Steelhead beaches are filled most weekends by 10 a.m. Once full, the lots close until space opens. Due to safety concerns, cars are not allowed to wait at the entrance for cars to leave and street parking is limited.

Sonoma County Regional Parks offers its River Shuttle as a low-cost transportation option to avoid full parking lots or the need to leave a car at each beach during float trips. An all-day ticket is $5. Children and teens 18 and younger ride for free.

The River Shuttle departs every 30 minutes beginning at 9 a.m. from El Molino High School at 7050 Covey Road in Forestville to Steelhead Beach Regional Park and Sunset Beach River Park. The shuttle loops all day, returning beachgoers to El Molino every half hour until 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day.
