Sonoma County to host October 3 webinar on updated plan to meet goals of Americans with Disabilities Act

The County of Sonoma will host a virtual public meeting on Oct. 3 to provide an overview of recent updates to its plan to bring all County-owned properties into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The 6 p.m. Zoom meeting will include a presentation on the County’s efforts to evaluate the accessibility of sidewalks, curb ramps, bus stops, parking spaces and other County-owned sites. Members of the Sonoma County Public Infrastructure and Human Resources departments will outline proposed solutions and gather community feedback on how the County should prioritize nearly 5,000 sites for remediation.

The County of Sonoma is updating its ADA Transition Plan, which details structural changes to make County facilities and properties accessible to people with disabilities. The County’s first ADA Transition Plan was adopted in 1992 and last updated in 2009 pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, the landmark 1990 federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. 

“This plan is our roadmap to identify and remove policy, program and physical barriers that make it harder for disabled Sonoma County residents to use County properties,” said Supervisor David Rabbitt, chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. “As we enter the final phase of the most recent update of our ADA Transition Plan, we encourage the public to participate in this process and help us ensure that Sonoma County’s facilities, programs and services are accessible to all.”

The current Sonoma County ADA Transition Plan update can be viewed online here. The public is invited to provide input on the plan in advance of the Oct. 3 meeting through an online feedback form. Feedback will be accepted through Oct. 17.

During the meeting, County officials will address the objectives of the ADA Transition Plan; discuss work to date to make County properties accessible; brief the public on a recent survey of County properties in unincorporated areas that rated their accessibility; and answer questions from the public.
