Forbes lists Sonoma County as one of America’s best midsized employers

SANTA ROSA, CA | July 29, 2022

The County of Sonoma has been named one of America’s 500 Best Midsized Employers by Forbes magazine, the only government agency in California to make the magazine’s list.

In the government services sector, Sonoma County was ranked No. 6 among eight public agencies across the United States that made Forbes’ list of best midsized employers, which it defined as having 1,000 to 5,000 workers. Overall, Forbes ranked the county No. 302 among the 500 best midsized employers in the U.S. The full list can be viewed at Forbes.com

“This honor is a reflection of our efforts to advance a culture where each individual is respected for the unique background, perspective, abilities and insights they bring to our team,” said James Gore, chair of the county Board of Supervisors. “We strive to empower excellence while providing career pathways for our staff to reach their highest potential.”

The county, which employs 4,181 full-time workers, offers career opportunities in more than 800 different job classifications ranging from customer service and administrative support to nursing and engineering, information technology, criminal justice and land management.

Forbes partnered with market research firm Statista to compile its list of the best employers in the U.S., surveying 60,000 Americans working at employers with at least 1,000 employees. Participants were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family and other factors, including working conditions, development opportunities, compensation and diversity/equity/inclusion. The surveys were conducted anonymously, allowing participants to openly share their opinions.

In 2021, the County of Sonoma ranked 79th on Forbes’ list of the 100 best employers in California
