What You Need to Know about Oriental Fruit Fly Quarantines in Bay Area Counties

Attention wineries and processing facilities:
Seven male oriental fruit flies were recently discovered near Brentwood and Oakley in east Contra Costa County, and eight male oriental fruit flies were discovered in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale in Santa Clara County, prompting extensive delimitation surveys and eradication plans in response. As a result, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has placed a 99-square-mile area in Contra Costa County, and a 112 square-mile area of Santa Clara County under quarantine for the oriental fruit fly. What you need to know:
If you are receiving any host material, including winegrapes, from a grower located within a quarantine area, you must first obtain a compliance agreement and the proper exhibits to legally receive products grown within a quarantined area.
Who needs to sign a compliance agreement?
- Any grower within the quarantine areas
- Any harvester within and from the quarantine areas
- Any transporter/hauler
- Any processor or post-harvest treatment facility receiving fruit (this includes wineries)
Who’s in the quarantine area?
Search by address in the CDFA Oriental Fruit Fly Quarantine Map to determine if the vineyard or farm you’re receiving host material from falls within an oriental fruit fly quarantine zone. If so, you will need to contact CDFA who is working in conjunction with Contra Costa Agriculture/Weights & Measures branch in Knightsen.
