Sonoma County health officials extend heat alert through Thursday evening
SANTA ROSA, CA | September 06, 2022
The Sonoma County Department of Health Services has extended a Heat Alert through 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8, in response to the National Weather Service’s Excessive Heat Warning for the Bay Area.
The heat alert applies to all of Sonoma County, where triple-digit temperatures are expected to continue in many inland areas through Friday. Monday and Tuesday are expected to be the hottest days of the heat wave, which has sent daily highs over 100 degrees in many areas of the county since Sunday. Santa Rosa is forecast to hit 112 degrees on Tuesday afternoon, matching Monday’s high and nearing the city’s all-time record of 113 degrees in 1913.
Residents should prepare for the possibility of rolling blackouts through the week due to heavy energy demand. The California Independent System Operator, which manages the state’s electrical grid, issued a statewide Flex Alert due to an anticipated shortage of power today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is urging residents to reduce their energy use to help avoid rotating power outages.
Cooling centers, where people can escape the heat, are planned for several locations in the county. A complete list of cooling centers and operating hours can be found at socoemergency.org/emergency/cooling-centers/. Some may require masks to reduce the risk COVID-19 spread; check with your local cooling center to see if masks are required. Locations include:
- Cloverdale: Cloverdale Senior Multi-Purpose Center, 311 Main St.
- Healdsburg: Healdsburg Senior Center, 133 Matheson
- Petaluma: Petaluma Community Center, 320 McDowell Blvd.
- Rohnert Park: Rohnert Park Senior Center, 6800 Hunter

- Sebastopol: Sebastopol Community Cultural Center, 390 Morris
- Sonoma Valley: Grange Hall in The Springs, 18627 Highway

Excessive heat poses a significant health risk, particularly to the elderly, young children, pregnant women and those with chronic diseases.
