Sonoma County assessment roll increases to $108 billion for 2022-23

Sonoma County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor Deva Marie Proto has delivered the 2022-23 Assessment Roll to the Sonoma County Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office. The net assessment roll has hit an all-time high of $108,331,893,661, which is an increase of 6.46 percent over last year’s assessment roll amount and reflects the value of all real and business property as of Jan. 1, 2022.

The assessment roll is a listing of all assessed property within the county including a sum total of the assessed values of these properties.

Property tax revenue generated by the assessment roll funds vital institutions, such as public K-12 schools, community colleges, counties, cities, as well as public benefits and services. Approximately 50 percent of local property tax revenue goes toward public education.

The 6.46 percent increase in the assessment roll can be attributed to Sonoma County’s very strong residential market combined with a 2 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index. All jurisdictions within the county experienced a rise in assessed value with the City of Healdsburg experiencing the largest increase in the county at 13.6 percent. 

Property owners who feel their assessed value is higher than the market value as of Jan. 1, 2022 are encouraged to file an Application of Change Assessment with the County of Sonoma Clerk of the Board by Nov. 30, 2022. The Assessor’s Office is in process of reviewing Proposition 19 claims that were submitted during the 2021 calendar year. Proposition 19 began implementation for intergenerational transfers on Feb. 16, 2021 and base year value transfers on April 1, 2021. The Assessor’s Office saw an increase in deeds during the calendar year 2021 in response to this new legislation.
