Crosswalks & Pedestrian Crossing
Sonoma Public Infrastructure's offices are now located at 400 Aviation Blvd, Suite 100, Santa Rosa, CA 95403.
What is a Crosswalk?
Crosswalks and pedestrian crossings are meant to allow pedestrians to cross a street safely, while signaling motorists to stop. A crosswalk is typically denoted by pavement markings consisting of two parallel lines crossing the street.
Motorists are required by law to yield to pedestrians within a crosswalk. However, pedestrians should always use extreme caution when crossing the street, even within a crosswalk.
Pedestrian Safety
A common misconception about crosswalks is the idea that they will always make it safer for pedestrians to cross the street. This is not necessarily true. While a properly designed crosswalk can increase pedestrian safety, a poorly-designed crosswalk can do just the opposite.
For this reason, requests for new crosswalk markings must be carefully evaluated by County Roads engineering staff prior to installation.
New Installations
While a properly designed crosswalk can increase pedestrian safety, a poorly-designed crosswalk can do just the opposite. For this reason, requests for new crosswalk markings must be carefully evaluated by County Roads engineering staff prior to installation.
To inquire about the installation of a new crosswalk or pedestrian crossing, please contact the Transportation & Public Works main office.
