Helping Mothers Overcome Addiction
The Commission on the Status of Women to Host a Public Presentation and Q&A Session About a Recovery Program for Pregnant and Parenting Women in Sonoma County
Santa Rosa,CA | September 12, 2017
The public is invited to join the Commission on the Status of Women at their September 14, 2017 meeting when Linda Carlson, Executive Director of Women’s Recovery Services (WRS), will speak about the 120-day residential substance dependence treatment program of WRS. Primarily for pregnant and parenting women, this program provides a future for present and future mothers challenged with overcoming life-altering addictions.
Beginning at 6:00pm, this meeting takes place in the hearing room at Permit Sonoma (formerly the Permit & Resource Management Department), located at 2550 Ventura Avenue, Santa Rosa 95403.
Ms. Carlson will talk about the services that are offered to women – and, in most cases, their children – as they participate in a program that is designed to change their lives, and those of their children's, for the better. These women in our community face tremendous obstacles when going from a life of drugs and alcohol abuse to learning how to live in recovery. The program houses up to 20 women and up to 12 children.
Carlson will also address how there are many issues such as mental illness, domestic violence, trauma and sexual abuse that serve as causal triggers to dependency on alcohol and drugs. The program is a safe place for women to heal, begin new life journeys, and become productive members of society while also becoming stronger mothers.
The Commission on the Status of Women is a public advisory body comprised of 15 members appointed by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. The purpose of the Commission is to promote equal rights and opportunities that enhance the quality of life for all women and girls and to address issues of discrimination and prejudice that negatively affect women in Sonoma County.
