For Immediate Release
County voter guides for March Presidential Primary Election going out this weekend
SANTA ROSA, CA | January 26, 2024
County Voter Information Guides for the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election, will begin going out in the mail this weekend, Deva Marie Proto, Sonoma County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor-Registrar of Voters, announced today. The County Guides will be mailed to all active, registered voters in Sonoma County, with the exception of voters who have previously opted out of receiving such mailings. Visit this Registrar of Voters page to opt in or out of this service. Official Ballots will begin going out in the mail to all active, registered voters starting Feb. 5, 2024.
County Guides can be viewed online by going to the Sonoma County Registrar of Voters homepage and clicking on the “County Voter Information Guide” link under the “March 2024 Presidential Primary Election” heading. Alternatively, voters can access County Guides directly by clicking this link. Note that the U.S. Senate and Proposition 1 contests are not covered in the County Guides but are in the State Voter Information Guide, which is mailed out separately by the Secretary of State’s Office and can be viewed online here.
Compilations of all candidate statements and proposition/measure information are also available online at the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election page, by clicking on the “More Info for Voters” link near the top of the page and then selecting candidates on the ballot or propositions and measures on the ballot.
The March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election will be the first presidential election in Sonoma County since the County began conducting elections in 2022 under the Voter’s Choice Act election model, which gives voters more flexibility regarding when, where and how to cast their ballots. Counties conducting elections under this model must:
- Have at least one official ballot drop box per 15,000 registered voters starting no later than 28 days before Election Day. For the March 5 Primary, there will be 21 official ballot drop boxes open starting Feb. 6, 2024.
- Utilize vote centers instead of polling places. Vote centers offer several major advantages over polling places:
- They are usually open multiple days, not just on Election Day (with the exception of small special elections).
- Properly registered voters in the County can cast a regular ballot at whichever vote center is most convenient for them; they do not have to go to a preassigned location.
- They offer expanded voter services, including conditional (i.e., same-day) voter registration, voter address changes, language assistance, curbside voting and accessible ballot marking devices for voters with disabilities or those who prefer to use them.
- Have at least one vote center per 50,000 registered voters starting no later than ten days before Election Day. For the March 5 Primary, there will be seven vote centers open starting Feb. 24, 2024.
- Have at least one vote center per 10,000 registered voters starting no later than three days before Election Day. For the March 5 Primary, there will be an additional 24 Vote Centers open starting March 2, 2024.
