Commission on Human Rights Accepting Applications for Youth Mentorship Program for 2016-17

The Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights is currently accepting applications for the 2016-17 Junior Commissioner Project. County residents – ages 14 to 18–years old – are eligible to participate in the Commission’s youth mentorship program. The application deadline is May 1, 2016. Selected candidates will be invited for interviews scheduled for the last two weeks of May.

Junior Commissioners create their own group community service-related projects; are encouraged to become involved in the day-to-day human rights issues that affect their community; and are provided with opportunities to expand the boundaries of their individual and collective exploration of the meaning and impact of human rights. 

We believe that participation in the Junior Commission will:

• Produce a comprehensive understanding of the true meaning of Human Rights
• Increase individual awareness of human rights issues affecting youth
• Create opportunities to develop communication and facilitation skills
• Empower participants to recognize and act in ways that make a positive impact on their schools, their families, their friends, and their own self-esteem
• Result in the knowledge that one individual truly can make a difference

The Junior Commissioner term runs concurrent with the school year – August through May – and commission meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month.
