County of Sonoma’s ADA Toolkit
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal civil rights law which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in both employment (Title I) and in the provision of government services (Title II).
This Toolkit is intended as an easy on-line reference to aid Departments in providing accommodation to individuals with disabilities. This is not an exhaustive list, but rather, a guide to performing the more common accommodation transactions. Please consult with your Department’s ADA Liaison or the County’s ADA Coordinator if you would like additional information, or need help resolving an accommodation request.
ADA Title II Toolkit For Providing Customer Service and Accommodation
Departments must provide reasonable accommodation to individuals to ensure equal access to their programs and facilities, and
Departments must ensure that their communication with individuals with disabilities is as effective as their communication with others.
Providing the most effective accommodation should involve a discussion with the individual requesting the accommodation regarding the type of accommodation that would best serve their needs. Some examples are:
- providing a sign language interpreter for a board meeting, educational forum, public outreach, or class.
- providing materials in an alternate format, such as large print, or Braille.
